1.1 Shareware 1.1 Shareware
The 20/20 Word Processor (hereinafter referred to as 20/20)
is NOT "public domain" or free software, but is distributed as
"shareware".
Shareware is an innovative concept in software sales. By
supporting shareware, you "cut out" the middleman. Shareware
releases have no distributors to pay, no advertising budgets to
cope with, no marketing directors or sales commissions either.
When you buy a shareware product, 100% of the product price goes
right to the developer.
Shareware differs from buying a product in a store. Retail
purchases of software are "blind." You don't know if you'll use
or if you like the program until after you have tried it out --
then you can't return it!
When you try a shareware program, you don't have to pay for
it if you don't want to use it. You're never "stuck" with a
shareware program, you can't get ripped off. There are no
"Lemons" in the shareware world.
As you can see, shareware has many advantages for users and
developers. The user can "try it out" with no monetary risk, and
the developer receives more money for his work.
There is, however, an element of risk for the developer.
Some people will use Shareware and never pay for it. Just like
stealing from the store, it is a violation of copyright to
continue to use Shareware without registering it. It is THEFT.
We're taking a little risk in releasing 20/20 as shareware.
Please -- if you use 20/20 regularly, register the program.
1.2 Usage Agreement 1.2 Usage Agreement
Non-registered users of this software are granted a limited
license to make an evaluation copy for trial use on a private,
noncommercial basis, for the express purpose of determining
whether 20/20 is suitable for their needs. At the end of this
trial period, you should either register your copy or discontinue
using 20/20.
What does all this really mean? If you use this program,
you should pay for your copy. 20/20 is NOT free, we are not
giving away free copies. We are giving you the opportunity to
try it before you buy it. It is really just that simple. Try
it. Either pay for it, or quit using it. Paying for the product
- 2 -
allows us to provide you with support and updates, and stay in
business.
Registration of 20/20 entitles you to use the program on any
and all computers available to you, with the following
restrictions: If other people have access to this program or may
use it, then additional copies or a site license must be
purchased.
Everyone is granted a limited license to copy 20/20 only for
the trial use of others and subject to the above limitations.
This license does NOT include distribution or copying of this
software package:
1. In connection with any other product or service.
2. For general use within a company or institution.
3. For any consideration or 'disk fee'.
4. For distribution in modified form; i.e., the file
containing this license information MUST be included,
along with the full set of 20/20 distribution files.
Operators of electronic bulletin board systems (Sysops) are
encouraged to post 20/20 for downloading by their users, as long
as the above conditions are met.
Disk Vendors Take Note:
Disk vendors MUST obtain written permission from Codesmiths
before distributing 20/20. Certain restrictions apply.
Generally, ASP approved vendors are granted permission; others
are handled on a case-by-case basis. Please contact us for
details.

2.1 How to Register 2.1 How to Register
If you are a personal user (i.e. will be using 20/20 at
home, and not in relation to any business endeavor), registration
is $15. Corporate, Business, and Government registration of
20/20 is $25 per copy.
Registration entitles you to use 20/20 on any computer you
have access to, so long as no other person will be using the
program at the same time.
If you can not guarantee that only one person will use 20/20
at a time (i.e. you load it onto a network, etc.), then you must
purchase multiple copies of 20/20. Site Licensing for large
numbers of 20/20 copies can be arranged. Please call us at (305)
961-4480 for more information.
When we receive your registration, we will send you a
printed copy of this manual, a disk with the latest version of
20/20 and instructions on getting telephone support for 20/20.
Here's how you can save $5 on registration: 20/20 is not
distributed with any disabled functions. So, you won't NEED a
new disk when you register. In like, the 20.doc file is the
complete program documentation -- the printed manual contains the
same information. To save $5, just order the $10 or $20 version
- 4 -
of 20/20 registration, instead. We won't send you a disk or
manual, but we will send you a receipt.

3 Program Overview 3 Program Overview
3.1 What It Does 3.1 What It Does
20/20 is a word processing program aimed at two sets of
users. Laptop computer users benefit from 20/20's enlarged and
easy-to-read typefaces. Vision impaired users will find 20/20's
high-magnification editing modes a blessing for their word-
processing needs.
- 5 -
20/20 has a complete set of word-processing features, and
can operate well by itself. However 20/20 will best be used in
connection with an advanced word processor such as Microsoft
Word, Borland's Sprint or Micropro's Wordstar.
20/20 will edit files up to 64,000 characters in size. This
is approximately 15,000 words, or over 100 double-spaced sheets
of paper. If longer files are desired, they must be constructed
in "chapters" and printed in sequence, or assembled for printing
with a word processing program with advanced formatting features.
20/20's print operations include: margin setting, double or
single space, and page-numbers. Special "command strings" can be
used for custom printer features, such as different sizes of
text.
20/20's editing functions include: searching the document
for a series of letters, search and replace, selection of areas
to copy, move or delete, and disk load/save of portions of text.
20/20 is designed to be as easy to SEE as possible. All
program text and messages are printed in large, high contrast,
easy to read letters. 20/20's cursor is easy to see. If you
should "lose" the cursor, a single keypress will highlight it.
20/20's disk requirements are a tidy 80K. For laptop
computer users without a hard drive, this small program size
makes 20/20 especially valuable. Big WP programs can take
upwards of 600K of your valuable floppy or solid-state disk
space.
20/20 will work on any laptop/desktop computer with
Hercules, CGA, EGA or VGA graphics modes running DOS 2.1 or
later. Memory required for program execution is 320K.
4 Installation 4 Installation
20/20 is completely self-contained. There are no auxiliary
files. Installing 20/20 is as simple as copying the 20.EXE file20.EXE
to a convenient place on your work disks.
Floppy users can copy the 20.EXE file to their boot disk, or
maybe put a copy on each data disk.
Hard drive users should place the 20.EXE file in a "path"
directory, such as the DOS directory, so it will easily be
accessed from anywhere on the hard drive.

5 Visual Setup 5 Visual Setup
If you are not already running 20/20, type 20 from the
command line prompt and press enter. You'll then be presented
with the program Main Menu. Cursor down to "Visual Setup" and
press ENTER.
A "dialogue box" will be displayed on screen, showing you
the current settings for on-screen displays. There are five
sections, four of which are settings you can change.
5.1 Character Size 5.1 Character Size
20/20 has seven different sizes of characters. The smallest
size is just a little larger than the standard 80 column screen
display. The largest is about eight times bigger than that.
20/20's text fonts are styled as a serif roman. This type
of characters is proven easier to read than a non-serif style,
even at slightly smaller point sizes. 20/20's fonts are also
proportionally spaced. This means that, on screen, an M will
take up more space than an I. This also makes for easier
reading.
20/20 comes configured for "MEDIUM" size text. this
corresponds to about 40 characters by 16 rows of text. 20/20's
other text sizes translate to:
Small 47 x 21
Medium 39 x 16
Large 24 x 10
Jumbo 20 x 8
X-Large 19 x 6
Giant 12 x 4
Huge 10 x 3
These numbers are accurate for VGA compatible displays.
EGA, CGA and Hercules displays vary slightly.
To choose a character size, use the cursor keys to move the
flashing box till it surrounds the size of your choice and press
ENTER.
5.2 Display 5.2 Display
There are two choices for display, BETTER and FASTER. These
settings have no effect unless your computer is EGA or VGA
compatible.
- 7 -
The BETTER setting produces high quality displays, but at a
slight cost in update speed. FASTER decreases the quality of the
display slightly, but results in a speedier screen update.
In addition, some laptop computer LCD displays vary in
display steadiness with different display modes. The FASTER mode
uses a different display mode than BETTER. If one or the other
video display seems shaky or faint, try switching video quality
modes.
To choose a video quality, use the cursor keys to position
the flashing box over the mode you desire and press ENTER.
5.3 Text Color 5.3 Text Color
Text in the editor can be displayed in either black
characters on a white background (like a newspaper) or white
characters on a black background (like normal computer text).
Choose your preference by using the cursor keys to move the
flashing box over the color of your choice and press ENTER.
5.4 Character Width 5.4 Character Width
Some laptop computers have vertically "squashed" displays.
By selecting NARROW characters, you can combat this problem.
5.5 Saving Your Changes 5.5 Saving Your Changes
To save your changes, move the flashing box to the SAVE
symbol, and press ENTER. Your choices will be stored on disk for
you, so you will not have to re-enter them later.
If you want to cancel the changes you made, move to CANCEL
and press ENTER.
6 Printer Setup 6 Printer Setup
If you are not already running 20/20, type 20 from the
command line prompt and press enter. You'll then be presented
with the main menu. To setup 20/20 for your video preferences,
cursor down to "Printer Setup" and press ENTER.
A "dialogue box" will be displayed on screen. There are
five sections, four of which are settings you can change.
- 8 -
6.1 Printer Commands 6.1 Printer Commands
These two editable lines control the printer commands sent
to your printer BEFORE and AFTER you print. The BEFORE line is
sent to the printer before any text is printed. The AFTER line
is printed after all the text and the final form-feed have been
printed.
These two lines enable you to set up special printer fonts
or modes. It is not the place of this manual to tell you exactly
what to enter here, because printer commands vary.
Most printers use "control" or "escape" characters in their
command sequences. Special key sequences entered on these two
lines will let you send these special characters to the printer.
To enter or edit the printer commands, use the cursor up or
down keys to position the flashing box. Use the left or right
cursor keys to move the insert bar. Enter text normally on the
keyboard.
Normal Just type normally. Your characters will be sent Normal
as-is to the printer.
Control Control characters (from 1 to 26) are entered by Control
pressing the ^ key (located on most keyboards over
the numeral 6 key), then the letter to control.
Control-A would be entered as ^A.
Other Enter other characters like this: A forward Other
slash, then the DECIMAL number of the character.
For example, the ESC character would be entered as
/27 If the number must be immediately followed by
other number characters that are not part of the
value to send, append 0's to the beginning of the
/ sequence, like this: /027 Add enough zeros to
make 3 digits total.
6.2 Margins and Sizes 6.2 Margins and Sizes
Chars Per Inch Normally this should be 10. If you change the Chars Per Inch
character size of your printer, change this
setting to reflect the CPI of the new size.
Lines Per Inch Number of printed lines per inch of paper. Lines Per Inch
Normally 6. Some printers have on-panel buttons
to set line spacing and CPI. Make sure your
printer's settings match the program's settings or
your printout will be distorted.
Page Width Width of the paper in inches. Normally 8. With Page Width
wide paper, you would enter 13.
- 9 -
Page Height Height of the paper page in inches. Normally 11. Page Height
With legal paper, enter 14. If you are using a
laser printer, enter 10.5 or 13.5 (one half inch
less than the actual page size).
Left Margin In inches, normally 1. The amount of blank space Left Margin
to leave on the left size of the page.
Right Margin In inches, normally 0.5. The amount of blank Right Margin
space to leave on the right side of the page.
Top Margin In inches, normally 1. The amount of blank space Top Margin
to leave on the top of the page, above any printed
text.
Bottom Margin In inches, normally 1.5. The amount of blank Bottom Margin
space to leave on the bottom of the page, below
any printed text. If you choose to have page
numbers printed, they will be printed two lines
below the bottom margin. If you want page
numbers, make sure your bottom margin is at least
three lines above the bottom of your paper.
Para Indent Paragraph Indent is the distance to indent the Para Indent
first line of a paragraph, in inches. Normally
0.5. 20/20 uses this autoindent feature instead
of making you enter spaces before paragraphs.
Paragraph Skip Distance to skip down the page after a paragraph, Paragraph Skip
in inches. Normally 0. This is the distance
moved down the page whenever a paragraph ends.
Keep in mind if you separate paragraphs by a blank
line in the editor, it will space for TWO
paragraphs on the printed page.
6.3 Print Style 6.3 Print Style
Page numbers, if selected, appear centered in the bottom
margin of the second and all subsequent pages.
Double Spacing, if selected, causes a blank line to be
inserted between every printed line.
6.4 Output 6.4 Output
Printer 1,2 or 3 selection determines which printer port
printed data is transmitted through.
- 10 -
6.5 Saving Your Changes 6.5 Saving Your Changes
To save your changes, move the flashing box to the SAVE
symbol, and press ENTER. Your choices will be stored on disk for
you, so you will not have to re-enter them later.
If you want to cancel the changes you made, move to CANCEL
and press ENTER.
7 Quick Start Guide 7 Quick Start Guide
This quick-start guide will lead you through creating a
simple document with 20/20. Start up 20/20 before proceeding,
and follow along with the tutorial.
7.1 Main Menu 7.1 Main Menu
When you start 20/20, you are presented with 20/20's main
menu. If you haven't gone through the visual and printer setup
procedures, you should do this now. Check the chapters "Visual

We're going to create a simple business letter with 20/20.
Select EDIT A FILE from the main menu by using the cursor keys to
move the highlighted bar, and pressing ENTER to select it.
7.2 File Selector 7.2 File Selector
You now see 20/20's "File Selector." The file selector is a
simple way of showing you the files available for editing.
Complete directions on using the file selector are written in the
Reference Guide chapter.
We are going to create a file from scratch. To do this,
press the TAB key to edit the FILENAME. Backspace over any
filename that may be there, then type LETTER1 and press ENTER.

Gentlemen:
I am very impressed with your program 20/20. Please find,
enclosed, a registration check of the amount $20.
I have a Toshiba 1200 laptop computer, and before using 20/20 was
very frustrated trying to word-process. The low-contrast display
and tiny letters made using Wordstar very difficult.
20/20's large text has turned my life around.
Thanks again,

7.5 Lost Cursor? 7.5 Lost Cursor?
Sometimes, you might "lose" the cursor. Even though the
cursor blinks, it might jump to a position you weren't expecting.
If this happens, press the TAB key. This makes the cursor a
large solid block for a moment.
7.6 Moving A Block Of Text 7.6 Moving A Block Of Text
Looking over the letter, let's say we want to rearrange it.
We'll move "20/20's large text has turned my life around." to the
first paragraph, and move the enclosure note to the end of the
letter.
Move the cursor to the beginning of the third paragraph,
right before "20/20." Press ALT-M (for MARK). This starts to
MARK or SELECT a section of text. Now move the cursor to the end
of the paragraph. As you pause, you'll see the section of text
you have marked be highlighted.
Now, we're going to CUT the text out. Press ALT-C (for
CUT). This removes the MARKed area from the letter and stores it
in memory. Move the cursor to the beginning of the second
sentence of the first paragraph, just before the word "Please."
Now we will PASTE the CUT text back into the letter. Press
ALT-P (for PASTE). Now the sentence we CUT is in the first
paragraph, where we want it. Now, to move the "Please..."
sentence to the end of the letter.
Move the cursor till it is just before the letter "P" in
"Please." Press ALT-M to mark.
Next, move the cursor to the end of the sentence and press

8 Reference Guide 8 Reference Guide
8.1 File Selector 8.1 File Selector
20/20's File Selector is quite powerful. It allows you to
load a file from anywhere on your system without having to type a
pathname. Here's how it works:
There are three places the cursor can be: As a bar in the
list of files, editing the filename, or editing the directory
path.
To change the cursor's area, press the TAB key.
When the cursor is a bar in the list of files, you can use
the cursor up/down, page up/down and home/end keys to move the
bar. Lower-case entries are real files you can load. When the
bar is over an upper-case entry with a slash, that is a
subdirectory. A drive name in brackets is, yes, a drive.
- 14 -
Pressing enter when the cursor on an item does one of three
things, depending on the item the cursor is on. If it is on a
file, then that file is loaded. If the cursor points to a
subdirectory (or the special ..\ backup directory) then the path
changes to reflect the new path. If the cursor points to a
drive, then the list switches to that drive.
If the cursor is editing the filename, use the left and
right arrow keys to move the insert bar. Backspace and Delete
both function to delete characters. Use ENTER to enter the
filename.
If the cursor is editing the path, ENTER will instead read
the new directory/wild-card specification you entered.
8.2 Editing Keys 8.2 Editing Keys
These are the keys operative in 20/20's editor:
Cursor Keys Includes Cursor Up, Down, Left, Right, Page UP, Cursor Keys
Page DOWN, Home and End. These all move the
cursor.
TAB This key highlights the cursor briefly, in case TAB
you've lost it.
ALT-M Starts marking text. Move the cursor to select ALT-M
the area to mark. If you press ALT-M again, the
mark will be canceled.
ALT-C CUT text you have marked. ALT-C
ALT-P PASTE text you have cut. ALT-P
ALT-F Search for text. ALT-F
ALT-R Search for and replace text. ALT-R
ALT-A Search again for text. ALT-A
ALT-S Save a marked block of text to disk. ALT-S
ALT-L Load a disk file into your document. ALT-L
ESC Bring up the EDIT MENU. ESC
8.3 Block Operations 8.3 Block Operations
The trio of keys ALT-M, ALT-P and ALT-C let you perform
block operations on your text. Using them in combination, you
can delete, copy or move text. Here's how it works:
- 15 -
Use ALT-M to start marking. After ALT-M has been pressed, a
pause in cursor movement will highlight the marked area. (Note:
The marked area does NOT have to be displayed for it to take
effect.) If ALT-M is pressed again, the mark will be canceled.
Press ALT-C to remove the marked text from your document and
save it in a separate area. This area can hold up to 2,000
characters.
Press ALT-P to paste text from the cut area back into the
document. You can paste multiple times.
Here's how you use those three keys to perform move, copy,
and delete operations:
To MOVE text, use the cursor keys to position the cursor to
the beginning of the area you want to move. Then press ALT-M.
Now, move the cursor to the end of the area and press ALT-C.
Next, move the cursor to the area you want to move TO. Then,
press ALT-P.
To COPY text, use the cursor keys to position the cursor to
the beginning of the area you want to copy. Then press ALT-M.
Now, move the cursor to the end of the area and press ALT-C, then
immediately ALT-P. Next, move the cursor to the area(s) you want
to copy TO. Press ALT-P at each area.
To DELETE text, use the cursor keys to position the cursor
to the beginning of the area you want to delete. Then press
ALT-M. Now, move the cursor to the end of the area and press
ALT-C.
You can save out chunks of your document to disk under
filenames of their own. To do this, MARK the area to be saved
and press ALT-S (for SAVE). A file selector will pop up.
Also, you can load text into your document using the ALT-L
(for LOAD) command. Press ALT-L at the point you want the text
to be inserted and a file selector will appear.
8.4 Text Search and Replace 8.4 Text Search and Replace
20/20 enables you to search your document for a series of
characters. Press ALT-S to pop-up the search box. Enter the
text you want to search for in the area provided.
Choose whether you want a CASE SENSITIVE or CASE IGNORED
search, then select OK.
If you want to search for the same text again, you can
shortcut the ALT-S menu by pressing ALT-A for AGAIN.
- 16 -
20/20 also allows you to automatically replace old text with
new. Press ALT-R for REPLACE to bring up the search/replace
menu. There are two lines, instead of just one as the search box
has. You'll enter the text to search for, and then what to
replace it with.
There are three options in the Search/Replace window, as
well. Case Sensitive works like it's Search option namesake,
causing the upper/lower-case sensitivity to be active. Global
replace instructs 20/20 to search/replace on all found copies of
the search string from the position of the cursor to the end of
the file. Finally, the Prompt on replace option determines
whether the program will ask you for verification before it
actually changes your file.

20/20's file formats are standard "ASCII Wrap" format. All
text is saved as ASCII characters. Each paragraph is a string of
text terminated by CR/LF.
Any word processor which will load (or import) ASCII data
will load 20/20 files.
20/20 will only display ASCII codes from 32 - 127, and the
CR/LF characters. All other character types appear as a shaded
block in the edit display. To save space in the program, these
infrequently used characters (0-32 and 128-255) were eliminated
from the program fonts, and will never appear.
